Remember
your TV Licensing Notifications this Summer
18th June 2008
As Euro 2008 kicks off a summer of sport, retra is urging retailers to keep
up to date with their TV Licensing notifications.
Dealers who provide TV equipment for sale or hire are legally obliged to notify
TV Licensing of customers’ names and the address where the equipment
is to be installed. Failure to do so within 28 days of sale could result in
prosecution and a financial penalty of up to £1,000.
By law, the type of equipment that needs to be notified includes television
sets, set top boxes, DVD recorders, video recorders, and computer TV cards.
Over the coming months, TV sales are expected to remain buoyant, particularly
with the launch of Freesat and the ongoing switch to digital.
Bryan Lovewell, Chief Executive of retra, said: “This summer’s
sporting events, along with digital switchover, mean that the outlook for TV
equipment sales remains positive.
“But no matter how busy they are, we ask all retailers to ensure that
their staff know it’s a legal requirement to notify TV Licensing of sales
of TV sets and other TV receiving equipment.
“Retailers who fail to notify TV Licensing risk prosecution and a large
fine, so make sure you keep up to date this summer.”
Joanna Pearce, TV Licensing spokesperson, added: “While retailers are
busy preparing for the extra sales that come with major sporting events, TV
Licensing is urging them to take the time to remind staff of the need to notify.
“As people upgrade their TV equipment, retailers will be hoping for
a busy summer, but that’s no excuse to fall behind or forget about notifications.”
TV Licensing is also encouraging new TV dealers to register with them as soon
as possible. By registering they will receive a welcome pack, which provides
a summary of legal requirements, a Q&A sheet, point-of-sale material and
a poster that can be placed in staff rooms as an extra reminder.
