Agreement reached for independents to stock freesat
6th May 2008
A breakthrough agreement has been reached between retra and freesat,
enabling independent retailers to sell the free-to-air satellite
service much earlier than first anticipated.
freesat launches today (Tuesday 6 May) and will be available to
all UK independents from next month, subject to signing a service
level agreement.
freesat’s original plan had been to involve the independent
sector after the initial six-month launch phase, and only then
if they were members of euronics.
The new agreement has been warmly welcomed by retra who worked
closely with freesat to secure an earlier date for independent
retailers.
Bryan Lovewell, Chief Executive for retra, said: “Needless
to say we are delighted that this agreement has been reached.
“With 2008 predicted to be a challenging year, new products
such as freesat can only help independent retailers increase footfall
and profits.
“I am particularly pleased that independents will be able
to sell freesat ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games, which take
place in August.”
freesat currently offers a basic SD and HD box, with a HD DTR
available from July. Panasonic will also launch a freesat HD iDTV
next month.
Independent retailers can order freesat through Alltrade BDC,
Double D, Euronics and Eurosat.
Looking ahead, Bryan added: “What freesat must do now is
work to ensure independent retailers have access to timely information
and support in order to effectively sell the service.”
